Program Description:The Justice-in-Education Initiative is a collaboration between the Center for Justice at Columbia University and the Heyman Center for the Humanities, along with the Media and Idea Lab of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race, to provide educational opportunities to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated persons and to integrate further the study of justice into the Columbia University curriculum.

Programs Offered:The Justice-in-Education Initiative includes various programs that aim to make higher education available to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students and to contribute to the growing movement to end mass incarceration. Programs include the Rikers Education Program, Prison Education Program, Justice-in-Education Scholars, JustArts, and Changing the Narrative.
 
Prison Education Program
Bringing Columbia courses to students who are currently incarcerated in local state prisons, as part of the effort to increase access to higher education for justice-involved individuals.
 
Justice-in-Education Program
Formerly incarcerated individuals enroll in a skills-intensive humanities course, conducted on Columbia’s Morningside campus.
 
Unique Features: JIE has two programs that works with youth populations that are impacted by mass incarceration: JustArts and Changing the Narrative.
 
Also, in addition to educational programs for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students, JIE is working to develop strong curricular support for the effective engagement of Columbia faculty and students in prison and jail education. The Justice in Education Initiative provides Columbia students and faculty with an interdisciplinary framework for understanding criminal justice issues by supporting the development of new course offerings within the undergraduate curriculum that engage contemporary issues of justice.
