The Petey Greene Program was founded in 2008 in Princeton, New Jersey. Currently in partnerships with universities in New Jersey, and expanding to those inWashington, D.C., Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania, the program supports educational achievement in prisons by providing free, one-on-one tutoring for students pursuing their degrees while incarcerated.
Although studies have shown that education is one of the most effective methods to reduce recidivism and limit the financial and societal costs of incarceration, because high quality educational programs are largely perceived as both costly and complicated, there is a discouraging lack of educational resources and programs forpeople who are incarcerated. The Petey Greene Program is working to make a difference by offering a free service, supplementing and further enriching existing educational programsin prisons.
